Norbert gaining little strength.10.10.08

At 800 am PDT the center of Hurricane Norbert was located near latitude 20.6 north…longitude 113.4 west or about 275 miles…445 km…southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Norbert is moving toward the north near 10 mph…17 km/hr. A turn toward the north-northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected tonight. A faster motion towards the northeast is expected on Saturday. On this track…the center of Norbert will be nearing the southern Baja California peninsula Saturday morning.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 mph…160km/hr…with higher gusts. Norbert is now a category two hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Some weakening is forecast during the next 24 hours before Norbert reaches the Baja California coast. An Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate Norbert around midday.

How’s Lowell doing at Baja Sur??09.11.08

Lowell moving over the southern Gulf of California toward Mainland Mexico. Locally heavy rainfall occurring over southern Baja California and northern Sinaloa state. At 800 am PDT the center of Tropical Depression Lowell was located near latitude 23.8 north…longitude 109.2 west or about 75 miles/125 km northeast of Cabo San Lucas Mexico and about 140
miles/225 km south of Los Mochis Mexico. In La Paz there was not much to “feel” except a few showers

The depression is moving toward the northeast near 10 mph and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. On this track Lowell will move over the southern portion of the Gulf of California today and into Mainland Mexico tonight where it will quickly dissipate.

Lowell got “de-graded’ to an depression. He dumped a little rain on La Paz today - nothing big to write about actually. We would say - the usual :). Had to make a run to centro this half hour ago - here a photo taken with cell-phone

Lowell is approaching southern Baja California. A tropical storm watch is in effect along the southwestern coast of the southern Baja Peninsula from Bahia Magdalena southward to Cabo San Lucas. The depression is moving toward the northeast near 7 mph and this general motion is expected to continue tonight. On this track the center of Lowell is forecast to move across the southern Baja California peninsula tonight or early Thursday then turn toward the north-northeast over the southern portion of the Gulf of California Thursday and move into Mainland Mexico Thursday night.

Lowell moving away from Socorro island with little change in strength. Interests in southern Baja California should monitor the progress of Lowell. For storm information specific to your area including possible inland watches and warnings…please monitor products issued by your local weather office. At 200 PM PDT…2100z…the center of Tropical Storm Lowell was located near latitude 19.8 north…longitude 112.1 west or about 100 miles…160 km…northwest of Socorro island and about 255 miles… 415 km…southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Lowell is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph…19 km/hr…and this general motion is expected to continue with a decrease in forward speed tonight and Tuesday. A turn toward the north is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph…85 km/hr…with higher gusts. A gradual weakening is expected during the next couple of days.
